Massimiliano Carciofi is working as Postdoc in the company Phytowelt GreenTechnologies GmbH in Cologne, Germany. The scope of his research is to study the epigenetic mechanisms influencing the somatic regeneration of the crop plant barley. Moreover he aims to identify drugs capable to enhance the regeneration potential of barley cell cultures used as resource for protoplast isolation.
He conducted his studies at Universitá degli Studi di Perugia, Italy, where he obtained a Bachelor in Biology and an M.Sc. in Applied Biochemical and Biomolecular Methodologies. For his Bachelor Thesis he studied the plastome inheritance in Medicago sativa under the supervision of Prof. Daniele Rosellini. He obtained his M.Sc. degree in 2008 after completing the M.Sc. Thesis with Prof. Pietro Buzzini on the characterization of antimicrobial activity of a killer protein from Williopsis saturnus toward food spoilage yeasts. In 2012, he obtained a PhD in Genetics from Aarhus University, Denmark. The research project was conducted in the section of Crop Genetics and Biotechnology, under the supervision of Dr. Kim Hebelstrup and Prof. Preben Bach Holm. The project involved the use of genetic engineering to modify starch biosynthesis and generate polysaccharides with novel properties in barley grain.
