Prof Howard’s group mathematically models biological systems at a variety of scales from subcellular up to the level of embryonic development. Our core interest is in uncovering complex dynamics even in systems with few components and apparently simple interactions. We are especially interested in systems exhibiting pattern-forming and/or stochastic effects. One particularly important topic of recent research has been the fundamental basis of epigenetic memory using the response of plants to winter cold as a model system. Our approach is highly interdisciplinary, and relies heavily on the techniques of statistical physics, as well as on close collaboration with experimental groups.
