Phytowelt GreenTechnologies GmbH (Phytowelt) is an innovative international active enterprise offering contract research in plant and industrial biotechnology with clients in New Zealand, Japan, Canada, the USA and Europe. Phytowelt GreenTechnologies was created in 2006 as a merger of Phytowelt GmbH and GreenTec GmbH. The latter company is a spin-off company from the Max-Planck-Institute for Plant Breeding Research Cologne and was established in 1997. Dr. Peter Welters founded Phytowelt GmbH in 1998, was appointed as CEO of GreenTec GmbH in 2001 and continues the management of the merged companies since 2006.
The core technologies of Phytowelt are phytominingTM and phytodiversityTM. Through the platform technology phytominingTM, genes encoding plant enzymes are identified, isolated and expressed to provide new biocatalytic activities for fermentation. Fermentation processes are developed and microbial strains are optimized.
The platform phytodiversityTM includes development of innovative technologies of cell and tissue culture for modern plant breeding. The core competence – somatic hybridization via electrofusion of protoplasts – is applied to increase the gene pool and biodiversity of crop plants beyond the restrictions of sexual reproduction and crossing barriers. Phytowelt has proven expertise in plant regeneration and protoplast fusion from various different crop plants including medicinal (e.g. Mentha), ornamental, energy (e.g. poplar), food and feed plants (e.g. grasses, cereals).
